GPT-6 Is Here. Amazon Sellers Shouldn't Care (Yet) | Upside News

ChatGPT-6 Astra, Rufus on WhatsApp, and TikTok Shop's EU Launch

This week's Upside News covers OpenAI's ChatGPT-6 Astra launch and the AGI hype around it, Amazon bringing Rufus-powered shopping recommendations into WhatsApp, and TikTok Shop opening up 12 EU markets to UK sellers, three weeks after new EU fees landed.

In this episode: The team runs through this week's three biggest headlines: whether ChatGPT-6 Astra actually justifies the AGI claims being made about it, what Amazon's new WhatsApp shopping assistant means for advertising and discovery, and why TikTok Shop's EU expansion is more complicated for UK sellers than the headline suggests.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT-6 Astra shows real gains in coding, maths and reasoning, but for most e-commerce use cases (strategy and data analysis rather than raw coding), the practical difference for sellers is more about speed and token efficiency than a step change in capability.

  • Amazon's WhatsApp shopping assistant lets customers message a verified Amazon number for recommendations before completing purchase on the Amazon app or site. It moves discovery off-platform while Amazon still earns a commission, which may make it more durable than Rufus was on-platform.

  • TikTok Shop's EU expansion opens 12 markets and roughly 350 million customers to UK sellers from 19 October, but it carries the same VAT, EPR and responsible person compliance load as EU expansion on Amazon, and TikTok's own EU warehouses only fulfil five of the twelve markets.

The detail

OpenAI launched ChatGPT-6 Astra last week alongside a wave of claims from figures like Nvidia's Jensen Huang and OpenAI's Greg Brockman that this marks the arrival of AGI (artificial general intelligence). The rollout itself has been messy, with users locked out and Sam Altman publicly apologising and issuing usage credits back. On capability, Astra shows genuine strength in coding, maths, browsing and cybersecurity, but for general reasoning tasks it's not a clear step ahead of competing models, and Claude still scores higher on intelligence and deep reasoning benchmarks, which is the kind of task most e-commerce sellers actually lean on AI for. The practical upshot for sellers is speed and token efficiency rather than a fundamentally different capability.

Amazon has launched a Rufus-powered shopping assistant inside WhatsApp, letting customers message a verified Amazon business account for product recommendations and deals before completing the purchase on the Amazon app or site. It's reportedly not using cookies or building personalised profiles yet. The read here is that Amazon avoids putting its roughly $20 billion a quarter in ad revenue at risk by keeping the transaction on-platform, while still capturing the traffic benefit of an off-platform discovery channel, which may make this a more durable play than Rufus's in-app run.

TikTok Shop now lets UK sellers expand into 12 EU markets from their existing UK shop starting 19 October, opening access to around 350 million customers, with eligibility largely automatic based on account health. But the timing lands awkwardly against new EU costs: a £3 small parcel fee has just landed, and new IOSS diversion monitoring rules are coming in within weeks. Sellers holding stock in TikTok's EU warehouses will still need the same VAT registrations, EPR compliance and responsible person arrangements required for EU expansion on Amazon, and TikTok's own Germany and Spain warehouses only fulfil five of the twelve EU markets, meaning sellers need a separate plan for the other seven. The upside: sellers who've already built out EU compliance for Amazon face a much lower barrier to replicating it on TikTok Shop.
